The main aims of the project

The project will support the overall strategic goal of the program for sustainable development in the border reagion in suppoert of the wider European Cooperation and Integration Efforts. It will address the specific objective No. 3 ( "To further develop the attractiveness and quality of life in the cross border region") because it is aimed to develop and implement a joint educational and training program in high schools from Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia and Bulgariafor pollution prevention as well as field works aimed to apply the knowledge gained by the training. Furthermore, it is consistent with the specific objective No.3 ("To promote social cohesion and cross-border cooperation") because it is aimed to implement an environmental joint initiative and, at same time, to contribute to the human resource development -by training as trainters on environmental issues high school teachers from both countries.

The implementation of the project

The project will develop and implement a joint environmental traning program for high schools teachers in order to transfer this knowledge to their students within workshops. Field research in both regions will be implemented by students in order to apply the knowledge gained during the workshops. Joint field research will be also organized to give the students drom both countries the opportunity to work together.

An advocacy campaign will be supported by this project, having two aims:

  1. To encourage local firms to adopt environmentally friendly practices. -Students of the two high schools will start a "letter campaign " for obtaining an eco-commitment from local companies.
  2. To encourage stidents, civil society actors and citizens to voice their environmental concerns -launching a project website having a "letter to official" too for submiting letters to local decision -makers and geographical maps of Valandovo and Sandanski, where citizens to register their perceptions of environmental problems and hazards by placing flags (pins) with written comments to appropriate locations on the map.

First of all, it has to be mentioned that the equipment of two labs in the procejt area has the par amount importance not only for the high schools, but for the local farmers, too. The project instruments can be used for examination of the soil and water, which are mainly used for cultivating the plants and farming animals. Furthermore, the instruments can be used for drinking water analyses. The data gathered by the students during the field work activities will be used for all local population, because the most of local people consumate water from communal water systems, which are not clearly certificated by the local and central authorities. Second, the project could be a model for other high schools in the cross-border area for joint cooperation and implementation of educattional programs for their students. The multiplier and leverage effects of the project vis a vis other initiatives will stem from know-how exchange which is a core element of cross-border cooperation.
